How Long Does an Air Conditioner Last?

Happy customers sitting on a couch.

Well-maintained central air conditioners can last up to 10 to 15 years before they slow down, although ENERGY STAR® recommends replacing AC and heat pump units that are “more than 10 years old.”

What Is a Good SEER2 Rating?

SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2, a rating that measures a cooling system’s energy efficiency. All new central air conditioners must be at least 13.4 SEER2 in the Pacific Northwest.

The higher the SEER2 number, the greater the energy efficiency.

Frequently asked questions

Have questions about keeping your home cool and comfortable? Explore answers to common questions about air conditioning repair, installation, maintenance, ductless systems, air handlers, and other cooling needs. If you still have questions, the experienced team at Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing is ready to help.

We are a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, a Trane Comfort Specialist and a Lennox Premier Dealer, and we also work with Carrier products. Those accreditations mean factory training and access to warranty terms that general dealers do not always have.

Often, yes. Federal tax credits and utility rebates in Washington change from year to year and depend on the equipment you choose and your utility. We keep track of what is current and will tell you what your specific install qualifies for, so the incentive is part of the decision rather than a surprise afterwards.

A straightforward replacement is usually a single day. Adding cooling to a house that has never had it, or running new ductwork, takes longer and we will tell you how long before we start. You get a detailed onsite proposal first, so the scope and the price are settled before anyone picks up a tool.

By calculating it, not by copying what was there before. Square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling heights and how leaky the house is all feed into it. Oversizing is the common mistake and it makes comfort worse, because the unit short cycles and never runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air.

Often the same day. If you call before 1pm we can usually get a technician to you that day, and members of our 5 Star Maintenance Plan go to the front of the queue. Our vans are stocked, so most common repairs are finished on the first visit rather than waiting on a part.

It is our annual maintenance membership. Members get discounted annual maintenance, priority service, no overtime charges, a discounted diagnostic fee that is free at the Platinum level, an extended repair warranty, discounted water heater service, and a reminder when your maintenance is due. Members who call before 1pm can usually be seen the same day.

A three year labor warranty on our work as standard, plus a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. Manufacturer warranties on the equipment itself run separately and vary by brand and model. A Comfort Shield Extended Warranty is available if you want coverage beyond that, and we will explain what each one covers before you decide.

Yes. Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing offers financing options to help you spread the cost of larger projects, such as a new heat pump, furnace, air conditioner, water heater, or electrical panel upgrade, into manageable monthly payments. Visit our Financing page to see current options, or call us at 206-784-8101 and our team will walk you through what's available for your project.

We quote upfront, before the work starts, so there is no surprise at the end. For larger jobs we put a detailed proposal together onsite and back it with our Price Lock Guarantee, which means the price we put in writing is the price you pay. Estimates are free.

Yes. We hold Washington contractor licenses BALLANG062QD and BASHAAP823QR, and our technicians are licensed professionals. We are also a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, a Trane Comfort Specialist and a Lennox Premier Dealer, and a longstanding member of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.

Since 1993. We have been locally-led and operated that whole time, which is more than thirty years working on homes in this region. That matters more than it sounds: Puget Sound housing stock runs from 1920s bungalows to new construction, and the right answer for one is rarely the right answer for the other.

When Is It Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner?

Not every cooling problem means you need a new system. In many cases, a professional repair can keep your existing air conditioner running reliably. As your equipment gets older, however, frequent repairs, declining performance, and rising energy costs can make replacement a better long-term investment.

If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, struggles to keep your home consistently comfortable, requires increasingly frequent repairs, or costs more to operate than it used to, it may be worth considering a new system. Today’s air conditioners offer improved efficiency and comfort features that can make a noticeable difference during warmer Puget Sound weather.

Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing can evaluate your current equipment and help you compare your options. If replacement makes sense, our team will help you select an appropriately sized system that fits your home, comfort needs, and budget, then provide professional installation for dependable performance from day one.
