Common Furnace Problems We Repair

Furnace problems do not always result in a complete loss of heat. Changes in performance, sounds, or energy use can all indicate that your heating system needs professional attention. Contact Ballard if you notice:
Uneven or Inadequate Heating: Cold rooms, weak airflow, or a furnace that struggles to reach the temperature set on your thermostat can point to airflow, equipment, or thermostat problems.
Strange Furnace Noises: Banging, rattling, squealing, or other unusual sounds may indicate loose components or mechanical problems that should be inspected.
Furnace Blowing Cold Air: A clogged filter, thermostat issue, ignition problem, or other malfunction can prevent your furnace from producing warm air.
Frequent Cycling: A furnace that repeatedly turns on and off may be struggling with airflow, temperature control, or another system issue.
Unexpected Energy Costs: A noticeable increase in heating costs can be a sign that your furnace is losing efficiency or working harder than it should.
Furnace Won’t Turn On: Problems with the thermostat, ignition system, electrical components, or other parts of the furnace can prevent your heating system from starting at all.

Yes. We hold Washington contractor licenses BALLANG062QD and BASHAAP823QR, and our technicians are licensed professionals. We are also a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, a Trane Comfort Specialist and a Lennox Premier Dealer, and a longstanding member of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.
Yes. Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing offers financing options to help you spread the cost of larger projects, such as a new heat pump, furnace, air conditioner, water heater, or electrical panel upgrade, into manageable monthly payments. Yes. Plenty of older homes across the region still run oil heat, and we service and replace them as well as gas and electric systems. If you are weighing whether to stay on oil or convert, we will cost both out on your actual house rather than a rule of thumb.
We quote upfront, before the work starts, so there is no surprise at the end. For larger jobs we put a detailed proposal together onsite and back it with our Price Lock Guarantee, which means the price we put in writing is the price you pay. Estimates are free.
Since 1993. We have been locally-led and operated that whole time, which is more than thirty years working on homes in this region. That matters more than it sounds: Puget Sound housing stock runs from 1920s bungalows to new construction, and the right answer for one is rarely the right answer for the other.
Often the same day. If you call before 1pm we can usually get a technician to you that day, and members of our 5 Star Maintenance Plan go to the front of the queue. Our vans are stocked, so most common repairs are finished on the first visit rather than waiting on a part.
A dusty burning smell on the first cold day is normal and clears in an hour or two. A persistent burning smell, or anything like rotten eggs, is not. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility first, then call us. Do not wait to see if it clears.
Common causes are a thermostat set to fan rather than heat, a tripped limit switch from overheating, a failed igniter or flame sensor, or a gas supply problem. A dirty filter causes the overheating that trips the limit switch more often than anything else, so that is worth checking before you call.
It is turning on and off more often than it should, and it is a symptom rather than a fault in itself. Restricted airflow, an oversized furnace, a failing flame sensor or a badly placed thermostat can all cause it. Left alone it wears the components out early, so it is worth diagnosing.
It is our annual maintenance membership. Members get discounted annual maintenance, priority service, no overtime charges, a discounted diagnostic fee that is free at the Platinum level, an extended repair warranty, discounted water heater service, and a reminder when your maintenance is due. Members who call before 1pm can usually be seen the same day.
A three year labor warranty on our work as standard, plus a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. Manufacturer warranties on the equipment itself run separately and vary by brand and model. A Comfort Shield Extended Warranty is available if you want coverage beyond that, and we will explain what each one covers before you decide.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Furnace?
Not every furnace problem means it is time for a replacement. If your system is relatively new, has been well maintained, and only needs a straightforward repair, fixing the existing equipment may be the most practical option. As a furnace gets older, however, frequent breakdowns, rising heating costs, and declining performance can make replacement worth considering.
Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing can evaluate your furnace and help you understand the condition of your system. We’ll consider factors such as its age, repair history, overall performance, and the cost of the needed repair before explaining your options.
Our goal is to help you make an informed decision that makes sense for your home, comfort needs, and budget, whether that means repairing your current furnace or considering a new system.
