New Furnaces Are Better for the Environment

Upgrading to high-efficiency equipment is good for the environment and your pocketbook!

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, upgrading an older gas furnace from 56 to 90 percent annual fuel utilization efficiency will reduce your home’s greenhouse gas emissions by over a ton each year. This is because when natural gas burns in a furnace, it releases carbon dioxide and other emissions—high-efficiency models minimize this impact.

New furnaces use less energy to provide the same amount of comfort. They also come with a new warranty, protecting you against unexpected and costly repairs.

How Much Can a New Furnace Save You?

A happy family on the couch.

Replacing an older furnace with a more efficient system can help reduce the amount of energy needed to keep your home comfortable. Furnace efficiency is measured by its Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE, which indicates how much of the fuel your furnace uses is converted into heat for your home.

The potential savings from a new furnace depend on factors such as the efficiency and condition of your current equipment, your home’s size and insulation, thermostat settings, and how much you use your heating system. While every home is different, upgrading an older, inefficient furnace can help lower energy use while providing more consistent comfort.

Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing can evaluate your existing furnace and help you compare replacement options based on efficiency, comfort, and your household’s heating needs.

Gas Furnace Maintenance

Be sure to always schedule an annual tune-up for your furnace and regularly change the HVAC filter at least every 90 days—more so if you have pets! Regular maintenance ensures cleaner combustion when natural gas burns in a furnace, improving efficiency and reducing harmful emissions.

We quote upfront, before the work starts, so there is no surprise at the end. For larger jobs we put a detailed proposal together onsite and back it with our Price Lock Guarantee, which means the price we put in writing is the price you pay. Estimates are free.

By calculating the actual heat loss of your house rather than matching the output of the old unit. Furnaces were routinely oversized decades ago, so copying what is there tends to repeat the mistake. An oversized furnace short cycles, wears faster and leaves rooms unevenly heated.

Most straightforward replacements are done in a day. If the venting, gas line or ductwork needs modifying, or the new unit sits differently in the space, it can run longer. You get a detailed proposal onsite first, so you know the scope and the price before we start.

Since 1993. We have been locally-led and operated that whole time, which is more than thirty years working on homes in this region. That matters more than it sounds: Puget Sound housing stock runs from 1920s bungalows to new construction, and the right answer for one is rarely the right answer for the other.

Often the same day. If you call before 1pm we can usually get a technician to you that day, and members of our 5 Star Maintenance Plan go to the front of the queue. Our vans are stocked, so most common repairs are finished on the first visit rather than waiting on a part.

It is worth costing out. A heat pump heats and cools with one system and runs efficiently in our winters, and rebates and tax credits often favor it. A gas furnace can still be the better answer depending on your rates, ducting and how long you plan to stay. We will show you both rather than steering you.

Higher AFUE means more of the gas you buy becomes heat in your house, and the difference shows up every month for fifteen years. The right level depends on how much you run it and what rebates apply, so we will work the payback out on your actual usage rather than quoting a generic figure.

It is our annual maintenance membership. Members get discounted annual maintenance, priority service, no overtime charges, a discounted diagnostic fee that is free at the Platinum level, an extended repair warranty, discounted water heater service, and a reminder when your maintenance is due. Members who call before 1pm can usually be seen the same day.

A three year labor warranty on our work as standard, plus a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. Manufacturer warranties on the equipment itself run separately and vary by brand and model. A Comfort Shield Extended Warranty is available if you want coverage beyond that, and we will explain what each one covers before you decide.

Is It Time to Replace Your Furnace?

Furnaces do not last forever, but age alone does not determine when you need a new system. Frequent repairs, uneven heating, unusual noises, rising energy costs, or difficulty keeping your home comfortable can all be signs that your current furnace is nearing the end of its useful life.

If you are unsure whether to repair or replace your furnace, Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing can help you weigh your options. We’ll consider the condition, efficiency, age, and repair history of your existing equipment along with your comfort needs and budget.

When replacement makes sense, our team can help you choose a properly sized, energy-efficient furnace designed to provide reliable comfort for your home.
