When Should I Schedule an Air Conditioner Tune-Up?

An AC unit outdoors.

The best time to have maintenance service performed is in the early spring before it’s time to turn on the cooling system. The temperature outdoors needs to be above 50 degrees for us to work on your air conditioner.

A maintenance service call only takes an hour or two to complete and can keep your system from needing emergency service.

Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips

Here are three practical AC maintenance tips to keep your home comfortable and efficient:

  1. Remove any vegetation or debris that might block the airflow from your outdoor condenser unit.
  2. Change your air filter routinely for a strong airflow. A dirty filter causes your machine to work harder.
  3. Set the temperature before it becomes hot outside.

Frequently asked questions

Have questions about keeping your home cool and comfortable? Explore answers to common questions about air conditioning repair, installation, maintenance, ductless systems, air handlers, and other cooling needs. If you still have questions, the experienced team at Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing is ready to help.

If you intend to have the system serviced anyway, generally yes. The 5 Star plan discounts the annual visit, drops or removes the diagnostic fee, removes overtime charges, adds priority scheduling and an extended repair warranty, and reminds you when service is due so it does not get forgotten.

It does two things. A clean, correctly charged system uses less electricity for the same cooling, and catching a failing capacitor early costs less than the compressor it takes with it. It also keeps most manufacturer warranties valid, which usually require documented annual service.

We check and clean the coils, test the refrigerant charge, check electrical connections and capacitors, clear the condensate drain, inspect the blower and airflow, and check that the thermostat is calling correctly. The aim is to find the parts that are about to fail while they are still just parts.

Once a year, ideally in spring before you need it. The point of the timing is that a problem found in April is an appointment, and the same problem found in the first hot week of July is an emergency, in the same week everyone else has one too.

Often the same day. If you call before 1pm we can usually get a technician to you that day, and members of our 5 Star Maintenance Plan go to the front of the queue. Our vans are stocked, so most common repairs are finished on the first visit rather than waiting on a part.

It is our annual maintenance membership. Members get discounted annual maintenance, priority service, no overtime charges, a discounted diagnostic fee that is free at the Platinum level, an extended repair warranty, discounted water heater service, and a reminder when your maintenance is due. Members who call before 1pm can usually be seen the same day.

A three year labor warranty on our work as standard, plus a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. Manufacturer warranties on the equipment itself run separately and vary by brand and model. A Comfort Shield Extended Warranty is available if you want coverage beyond that, and we will explain what each one covers before you decide.

Yes. Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing offers financing options to help you spread the cost of larger projects, such as a new heat pump, furnace, air conditioner, water heater, or electrical panel upgrade, into manageable monthly payments. We quote upfront, before the work starts, so there is no surprise at the end. For larger jobs we put a detailed proposal together onsite and back it with our Price Lock Guarantee, which means the price we put in writing is the price you pay. Estimates are free.

Yes. We hold Washington contractor licenses BALLANG062QD and BASHAAP823QR, and our technicians are licensed professionals. We are also a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, a Trane Comfort Specialist and a Lennox Premier Dealer, and a longstanding member of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.

Since 1993. We have been locally-led and operated that whole time, which is more than thirty years working on homes in this region. That matters more than it sounds: Puget Sound housing stock runs from 1920s bungalows to new construction, and the right answer for one is rarely the right answer for the other.

Why Regular AC Maintenance Matters

Your air conditioner may only see heavy use for part of the year, but regular maintenance can make a difference when warmer weather arrives. A professional tune-up gives your system a chance to be inspected, cleaned, and tested before small performance issues have an opportunity to become more disruptive problems.

Routine AC maintenance can help support efficient operation, maintain proper airflow, and reduce unnecessary strain on important system components. It also gives a technician an opportunity to spot worn parts, refrigerant concerns, electrical issues, and other potential problems that may otherwise go unnoticed until your air conditioner stops working properly.

Keeping up with professional maintenance can also help extend the life of your cooling equipment and protect manufacturer warranty requirements. With regular service from Ballard Heating, Cooling, Electric & Plumbing, you can head into the cooling season with greater confidence that your system is ready for the warmer days ahead.
